If you happen to visit Penang for a holiday, I would recommend a visit to the Eastern & Oriental Hotel there. Here you will find a rich representation of the history of Penang with its grand colonial architecture beautifully preserved. Hard to imagine that the hotel was first built way back over a hundred 125 years ago in 1885. Along one of the corridors of the hotel are photos of many famous people who have been guests in the hotel over the years.
While you are there, you should try out their English Afternoon tea served at the vintage 1885 restaurant from 2 to 5pm. The ambience here is really nice and quite possibly even more “British” than the Swissotel hi-tea in London which I recently had!! The food offerings of mainly a mix of scones, sandwiches and cakes may not be particulary spectacular but it does have a wide and very good selection of tea and lovely cuttery for you to go with it. Anyway you are there not just for the tea but more for the experience …
The afternoon tea experience is priced at RM52++ per person with an opportunity of a 15% discount if you charge against selected credit cards. I dare say a visit to Penang may not be quite complete without a brief stopover at the E&O. Now then, afternoon tea anyone?
